THC in the News - Coronavirus Data: Context is Everything
THC's Tiffany Mattingly weighs in on the challenges of interpreting the data in this article from the Cincinnati Enquirer.

One day late last month, Ohio Gov. Mike DeWine shared a stunning statistic: The number of COVID-19 patients in Hamilton County's hospitals had doubled in two weeks.

But the state’s data file for that day didn’t say that. Was DeWine mistaken? Or the data?

No, and no. The governor was referring to hospitalization data that was different than what’s displayed on the state’s coronavirus website. Neither set of numbers was wrong, but the absence of context caused confusion.

The disconnect points to one big pandemic issue -- the tide of data. Knowing what’s valuable can be confusing, to front-line doctors and the public alike.
